We all have witnessed the tough times we have cruised through for getting steel. Forget about the price and quality, getting steel itself was a big challenge. The journey is not yet complete.
Today India has a population of 115 million people and we are growing @ 1.55% which is double the rate china is growing.
Interestingly in next 15 years our population will grow by 32crores, which is equivalent to US population today. The question is, are we equipped to cater to our growing steel needs of our growing population?
Our per capita consumption of steel is 45kg compared to world per capita consumption of 190 kg. The positive signal is, while in last 10 years per capita steel consumption of world has increased by 35%, Indian per capita has increased by 58%
The actual challenge is not about production of steel, it's about distribution. It’s about making steel available for consumption with right quality at right time and at right price.
The objective is great, but journey is tough, especially when we accept the fact that 70% of Indians live in 6 lakhs villages and balance in 200 cities and towns. Making steel available to them is a challenging task.
